Maureen Papas
Special Advisor, Sustainability & Systems Thinking
I am a regarded expert in the area of environment, sustainability and governance. I hold a Bachelor of Arts (Hons), a Master of International Relations with a Master of International Environmental Law and a PhD in Law from Macquarie University. My research spans the fields of environmental law, natural resources law and in particular international, national and comparative water law and policy issues, with a focus on governance, sustainable practices and intergovernmental relations.
As a systems thinker, I have a very strong interest and expertise in international and national politics and the interface between politics and the law.
My background places me in a very unique position, to contribute to the ongoing debate and various strands of conversations on water systems. The effective regulation and sustainable uses of freshwater remains one of the most challenging issues in our society. Any such system will need to be flexible in order to address multiple uses of water and future pressures posed by environmental threats such as climate change.
Alongside my academic career I also have extensive experience in the business sector internationally. My business involvement over twenty-five years has helped develop strong practical experience where expertise in communications, strategic planning and achieving consistent results are essential to good business practice.
I have presented at numerous conferences worldwide and published in leading peer-reviewed academic journals.
I am currently an Associate with Water Witness International, a charity which works to improve the way that rivers, streams lakes and aquifers in developing countries are managed. I also work with Allpress Espresso in the establishment of their UK business.
